Disney Scrapbooking - A Walk Down MainStreet

The idea of Disney Scrapbooking layouts and projects was at first daunting to me. Yes, I had been to Disneyland and experienced paraphernalia of Disney trinkets and souvenirs. I still have original pendants of Disney and other theme parks today, some of which don’t exist anymore (like Marineland). Funny that Pendants aren’t sold anymore. Guess that means I have something quite valuable.

It was when we were children (and I remember in particular a time when it was just me and my parents) taking a trip to Disneyland. The first time, I remember was at night and I remember this wild sucker, the biggest I ever saw and my folks got it for me, somewhere over on Main Street. Now can you imagine that in a Disney scrapbooking layout?

My parents have photos somewhere of us kids getting pictures with the Disney cast of characters. Amazing how much younger everyone was then. Let’s see. I remember the rides…..The Pirates of the Carribean, The Haunted Mansion, The Tea Cups, It’s a Small World, Tomorrowland, and other fantastic rides and shows.

As you enter the area leading to the Sleeping Beauty Castle, there is a wishing well. One year Mom was not feeling so well, but we went to Disneyland anyway that day. My sisters and I threw pennies down that well with a wish and a prayer for Mom to get better. It turned out later she had pneumonia. She did get better, of course.

Today a lot of places, including Disney, give you all day passes and armbands and such. I remember when you received a set of tickets. The phrase “E” ticket today probably connotes something “exciting”. Those were considered the best tickets and you usually saved them for last because they got you on some fantastically fast rides, such as Thunder Mountain Railroad or Space Mountain. I would imagine that saving some of these items would have helped make some interesting Disney Scrapbooking pages.

Today we have the Disney Channel. I remember watching the Mickey Mouse Club. Disney also bought the rights to different tales, adapting them to children. Tales such as Little Red Riding Hood and Alice in Wonderland which today still live on in producer’s movies made for adults or to include more adult themes and/or life lessons as was originally intended by such tales and fables.

Some into Disney Scrapbooking have even talked about how to relate a child’s Disney costume to a scrapbook page, leaning toward the Princess theme.

Personally, as an adult, I find the original meanings behind the stories especially intriguing. Yet, Mr. Disney’s intent for his dream park business was for a sense of wholesomeness. It is said that in the making of Disney’s movies (outside the cartoon versions) certain actresses such as Annette Funicello never wore less than a once piece swimsuit. Disney is said to have asked this of her during a time when most ladies were getting into bikinis. It might have been simply asking her not to show her navel. Whether that was the case or not, some movies tell otherwise. Following are some photos of a layout depicting the visit to Disneyland my three nieces, Allie, Audrey, and the littlest, Josie, were part of in 2009.

I started the layout in my Scrapbook Meetup class on adhesives. I used liquid adhesive, glue dots, foam tape, adhesive spray, and double-sided tape in putting this layout together. I added additional Disney papercraft from the packet "Mickey and Friends 8x8 papers by Paper Pizazz/Hot Off the Press."

There is a lot that is strictly Disney, but then a number of fables or tales were borrowed, such as from the Brothers Grimm, which I intend to talk about apart from this with story scrapbooking - scrapbooking the truths behind the fairytale stories. From light to dark, making a contrast of the meanings of these tales from Disney back to the Brother's Grimm, and Aesop's Fables of Hans Christian Anderson.

It would indeed be most interesting to take a closer look at what we have learned from the Disney phenomenon and how to relate that to our Disney Scrapbooking experiences.

Below is a photo of Mom and us visiting Disneyland.
