Mirror Mirror

"For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face, now I know in part, but then I shall know fully just as I also have been fully known." I Corinthians 13:12

"For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was." James 1: 23-24.

"So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure." Philippians 2: 12-13.

The scriptures are like a mirror. As we look into them, like seeing our reflection, we see how we are. Yet, if we neglect to meditate on the scripture passage before us, we could forget what we just read. That is not helpful.

It is also true that when looking in a mirror, we only partially see ourselves -- funny how mirrors in fun houses can make you look fat, thin, tall or short. Sometimes we will only know a little, as seeing through glass darkly. Some day we will understand just as we are fully understood.

I think of the part of Snow White, where Maleficent asks "Mirror, mirror on the wall, whose the fairest of them all?" Like Maleficent, sometimes we are reminded of the fact we are not so perfect, that it is best to start with our reality. Who after all, is truly the fairest of all? Of course, the wizard in the mirror reminded Maleficent of this, but we have our own mirrors in the form of God's word to remind us of who we are and where we stand. But we must be doers, not only hearers. When the gospel is preached, everyone in the crowd hears it, but only those who act upon what they have heard can be saved. We are responsible for working out our own salvation personally. A life changed, changes.
