The Playground

“Who gave Himself for us that He might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify to Himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.” Titus 2:14

“Who can discern his errors? Acquit me of hidden faults. Also, keep back Thy servant from presumptuous sins: Let them not rule over me; Then I shall be blameless, and I shall be acquitted of great transgression. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Thy sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.” Psalm 19: 12-14.

“Cursing does not proceed out of my mouth. Today I give God full charge of my tongue. By His grace I will only speak words that will bring honor to His name.”

The Playground – My first job was as a ride operator in an amusement park. I was in it a long time. These were my first stomping grounds, sometimes my playground. Life is like a playground. When I think of the playgrounds in my life, I recall times when I fell and skinned my knees. Sometimes we skin our knees in life. When we do, we hurt not only ourselves but others too and in the process our relationship with the Father. But the Lord is merciful. Who knows our hidden faults so well! You know, the ones we try not to think about or maybe even feel hopeless about.

I thought of titling the piece “The Devil’s Playground,” but that is an Amish phrase for how they see the world outside the way they live. I simply named it The Playground because it is on the playground of life where we learn to run, play, get along with others and so forth. Some days we do better than others. God has called us to be different from the rest of the world. There comes a point in our lives where we most seriously must make a decision whether we will live our lives for God or for ourselves. It is easy to slip into the ways of the world. The old man is alive and kicking and we have to consciously put down our old desires and follow the Lord.

In my first job as a ride operator at the park is where I first learned to get along with others, sometimes having to stand up for what the right thing was to do. That did not make me popular. Of course, it is also when I first learned I needed to come out of my shell. The playground can be tough, but I think necessary to grow, even spiritually.
