Recipe Scrapbooking Ideas – Why would you record last night’s dinner? So many reasons to include your favorite recipes in your scrapbook!
Recipe scrapbooking ideas are out there, but, like trying to find just the right ingredients for a good meal, you have to do some searching and planning, or is it the other way around? Anyway, following are some recipe scrapbooking ideas to consider for your own recipe scrapbooking pages or index cards if you prefer. Whether putting together a recipe scrapbook or scrap box, part of the fun is recording the conversations that surround our cooking or baking experiences shared with others. Like so many different traditions that have come down family generations, one known recipe that would make an excellent recipe scrapbooking idea for inclusion in a project is the Scripture Cake Recipe. Today recipes are freely accessed on the Internet and through various groups, but in the good old days, recipes were as guarded as the family jewels. It is told that after repeated requests for the Scripture Cake Recipe, Dolly Madison relented in an ingenious manner. In other words, yes, she gave them the recipe, but they had to do some scripture digging to find the ingredients. This particular recipe is also unique in that it was used to help teach young girls how to bake a cake and memorize bible passages at the same time. Other versions of this recipe do exist with a few differences, but overall it is the same and the same idea is to pass along not only the knowledge of baking but also the wisdom of God. The Word of God (the Bible) has often been referred to in terms of food. I suppose, then, that one could say that among other things, the bible can be said to be a recipe book. Who knew? If you wish to make it more of a hunt, just follow the bible passages, especially if working with children, as part of your recipe scrapbooking ideas. The following recipe is used by permission of
Melody Mundawarara.
Scripture Cake Ingredients: ½ cup butter, Judges 5:25 1 1/2 cups white sugar, Jeremiah 6:20 3 eggs - separated into yolks and whites, Isaiah 10:14 2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 Kings 4:22 2 teaspoons baking powder, Luke 13:21 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1 Kings 10:10 1 teaspoon ground mace, 1 Kings 10:10 1 teaspoon ground cloves, 1 Kings 10:10 1/2 tsp salt, Leviticus 2:13 1/2 cup milk or water, Judges 4:19 or Genesis 43:24 1 tablespoon honey, Proverbs 24:13 1 cup figs - finely chopped, 1 Samuel 30:11 1 cup raisins, 1 Samuel 30:11 1/2 cup almonds, Genesis 43:11 Method: 1. Position rack in center of oven which must be preheated to 190 degrees C. 2. Lightly oil a 23 cm by 32 cm baking pan and set aside. 3. Dredge fruit with a tablespoon of flour. Set aside. 4. Sift together the flour, baking powder, salt and spices onto wax paper and set aside. 5. In a large bowl, cream together butter, sugar and honey until light and smooth. Add egg yolks, one at a time, beating after each addition. 6. Alternately add flour mixture and milk or water to batter, beginning and ending with flour. Beat after each addition to blend well. 7. Stir in raisins, chopped figs and chopped almonds. At this stage the batter will be quite stiff. 8. In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites until they form peaks. Stir into the batter, 1 cup at a time. Spoon batter into the prepared baking pan and bake at 190 degrees C for one hour, or longer if necessary. A skewer inserted into the center should come out clean and the cake should be well risen and golden brown. 9. Cool on a wire rack for 10 minutes. 10. Slide a knife blade between cake and sides of pan to loosen. Top the cake with another rack and invert so that the cake is right side up to serve. To go along with is the Burnt Sugar Syrup which can be drizzled over cooled scripture cake and garnished with whole almonds. Burnt Sugar Syrup: * 1 1/2 cups Jeremiah 6:20 (sugar) * 1/2 cup Genesis 24:45 (water) * 1/2 cup Genesis 18:8 (butter) In a 2-litre saucepan over low heat, melt sugar, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. After sugar melts, continue cooking, stirring frequently, until smooth. Remove from the heat, add butter and stir until it melts; allow to cool.

This could be an excellent project bringing the young and old family members working together looking up the scriptures. This activity also makes a great group-oriented recipe scrapbooking idea with which to make wonderful memories for your recipe scrapbook. One activity I decided to take photos of because it was probably the last time I would do it, was an afternoon of making tamales. It was a learning experience and one I will eventually scrapbook.

Now, why might you want to record last nights dinner in your recipe scrapbook? It’s not the food as much as the family or friendship ties that surround those meal times.
