Vellum Scrapbooking - Using Transparent Embellishments

Vellum scrapbooking is about using vellum paper for scrapbooking and other transparencies in embellishing your scrapbooking page. Translucent simply means able to see through. Vellum paper for scrapbooking can be an overlay to a delicately layered design. Vellum is durable. If you are looking for the paper by the name of vellum, you won’t necessarily find it. I know because I asked.

These embellishment materials can be used for embossing, printing, or stamping, but nothing can mar their finish faster than telltale adhesive streaks. For mess free results, follow the following suggestions.

Your options include a scrapbooking adhesive, fasteners, or the method of overlapping. When using a scrapbooking adhesive with vellum scrapbooking, completely cover the back with a light coat of spray adhesive, face up. Adhesives may cause a cloudy appearance. Position the vellum carefully before pressing.

Pressing and lifting may cause the material to wrinkle or the adhesive to streak. Press the piece down, smoothing with your fingers or a burnisher.

The second method is the use of scrapbooking fasteners. Using scrapbooking fasteners, such as brads, position the scrapbooking material. Holding the vellum transparency and background together, punch a small hole at the corner using a 1/8” punch. Insert either an eyelet or brad through both pieces and flatten.

Overlapping is another method of arranging elements on your page, positioning them so at least one item covers a portion of the vellum. Using double-stick tape (or other adhesive), adhere the portion of the vellum that will be covered. Secure from the top, as well, by placing additional adhesive on the element overlapping it. Even if the transparent piece isn’t adhered completely, it will most likely lay flat when inside a page protector.

Are you using a computer program? Some scrapbooking software includes the use of different embellishment types, including the look of vellum. I have used Scrapbook Factory Deluxe 3.0. Another common program used in digital scrapbooking is Photoshop Elements, ver. 8. This version is common with several digital scrapbooking webinars. Again, you can do vellum scrapbooking even in the digital scrapbooking world.

Here are a few ideas of how to use vellum in scrapbooking:

One popular way of using vellum is in an overlay. Using a bright or bold color, print a small narrative on the vellum paper in a dark ink. Not only does vellum scrapbooking paper come in various shades and colors, but also comes in a variety of paperweight from light to heavy for the desired effect.

Think of any material that is partially see-through and consider how it could be applied to your scrapbooking pages. For example, you could use vellum to create shower curtains or as one person did, make see-through, illuminescent lanterns.

In lieu of vellum paper for scrapbooking, since it is understood that such material simply has to be translucent or see-through, it is not beyond thought to use various ribbons as many ribbon embellishments have a shiny or translucent appearance.

Spending time outdoors? Do vellum scrapbooking on a themed page about camping. Make wings for insects such as butterflies or a fly at the picnic table.

Here’s a fresh idea. Take a poem you like or one you have put together and use the colors and texture of vellum and other transparent items to paint a picture of what that poem would look like in a picture. I have a poem I wrote called “On the Stage.” It’s a very colorful, picturesque poem.

So, how do you use vellum in scrapbooking?

On the Stage

Materials I used for the page are:

DCWV The Once upon A Time Stack: Create Your Own Fairytale 12" by 12" for the background.

Red cardstock by Bazzil, various colors of translucent ribbons, Recollections Brads in Pastel Medium Squares.

Printing of my poem, "On the Stage."
